2/28--Robocop and I hid our packs and hiked up the Springer Mt. Summit to take pictures and sign the log.  There was no one else there!  We then hiked down, retrieved

our packs and did the easy 7 1/2 miles to Hawk Mountain Shelter. This was a neat shelter--2 levels and slept 8-10.  There were about 10 other hikers in tents the majority being through hikers. We talked a lot but were in bed by 7:30 because to got so cold!  It got down to 30 that night, but the wind chill made it feel like half of that.  I was very cold all night and slept intermittently.  A mouse running behind me woke me up at 5:30 a.m.  The best thing about this shelter was the 3-sided privy.  I was sitting on it watching a beautiful sunrise.

3/1 -- Did 8 tough miles today--90% of the trail was either up or down.  I felt lousy when I got to camp.  I tented while Robocop used the Gooch Gap Shelter.  Another cold night, but I think the tent was warmer.  Tomorrow it's off to Suches to pick up my first mail drop.
