AT from Delaware Water Gap to PA443, PA-
Part 3:
PA443 to PA501, PA
|
Day 12, 04/16/2005- Met Charlie Johnson and Tom Stevenson at PA 501
at 9AM. We shuttled Tom's car around to PA443 and began the hike from there.
We encountered a construction detour going under I81. It was funny seeing
orange detour signs for the Appalachian Trail. We had a pretty good up, then
we ridged for the majority of the 8 miles to the William Penn Shelter. This
was an interesting shelter. 2 levels and approaching 10 years old, it was in
good shape. We were joined by section hiker "So Slow" for the night. I am
sleeping in the loft section of this shelter (the first shelter that I have
slept in this trip) along with Tom Stevenson. Charlie and "So Slow" slept on
the first level. We have alot of scouts tenting on the other side of the trail
tonight. It's good to see scouts camping.
Day 13, 04/17/2005- The last day. Had a good night sleeping in the loft. We ate breakfast, then did the last 4 miles back to PA501 and Charlie's truck. The first 2 miles to PA645 were an easy down. The last 2 miles were mostly up, mostly rocky and had some views. We ate at the Schull Family Restaurant in Pine Grove, PA afterwards, then drove back to PA443 and Tom's vehicle. So the hike was was over. Again, I was both glad and sad. Charlie drove me to Caledonia SP, PA where Nancy picked me up. I still have about 50 miles to do in order to have hiked the AT from Springer Mountain, GA to Kent, CT. Maybe next year? Maybe the year after? This was probably the toughest hike that I have done yet on the AT. Those PA rocks! As a post script, I made an incorrect decision to carry a phone card instead of a cell phone on this trip. It looks like pay phones are fast becoming a thing of the past. The ones I used looked like they were on their last leg. The ones that were not usable were numerous. So, it looks like I will be taking a cell phone and charger with me from now on for all hikes :( <<Part 2: Danielsville to PA501, PA
